Introduction

The Purpose of the Gaines Township Historical Society are as follows:

  • To develop an awareness of local history,

  • To encourage the preservation of local history (either sites or memories) whenever possible,

  • To provide assistance with genealogical research.

Join with us in making history come alive in Gaines Township.

In order to achieve these purposes, the Society takes the following actions:

  • Publish the Gaines Gazette at least quarterly with information concerning local events, glimpses into the past, and documentation of Gaines Township History.

  • Maintain the De Tray School as a hands-on museum which can be used by organizations and individuals to make history come alive.

  • Identify local historical buildings or sites and encourage their preservation, either physically or in memory.

  • Gather and maintain local historical records.

Accomplishments

  • Designation of the Cutler House as a State Historical Site.

  • Survey and documentation of Centennial Farms in Gaines Township.

  • Continued restoration of De Tray School.

  • Survey of church history and publication of results in the Gaines Gazette.

  • Ongoing research involving pioneer families and historic homes in Gaines Township.

How Can You Help?

  1. Support the Historical Society with your time, energy and donations.

  2. Identify your talents, and volunteer. Opportunities include: writing for Gaines Gazette, interviewing and taping oral histories, cleaning and mowing at De Tray School, maintaining records and files in the local history room, baking for bake sales, helping with special fund raising events by volunteering to sit at a food booth or act as a cashier at a craft sale, painting or hammering where necessary, providing transportation, etc. There are many ways in which you can be useful.

  3. Attend meetings when special programs are planned.

  4. Add your input and ideas.
