The residents of Gaines Charter Township are served and protected by two fire departments located in Dutton and Cutlerville. The Dutton Fire Department covers the majority of Gaines Charter Township and the Cutlerville Fire Department covers the smaller, more populated area of the Township. Both Departments assist the Byron and Caledonia Fire Departments as needed.

Since 1995, the Kent County South Substation has been in full operation serving Gaines, Caledonia, and Byron Center Townships. The department has several township patrol units (on 1st, 2nd, & 3rd shifts) serving Gaines Township to provide routine and emergency public safety services to its citizens.
