Election/Voting Information

An election is a formal decision-making process by which the population chooses an individual to hold public office.  Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy operates since the 17th century.  Elections may fill offices in the legislature, sometimes in the executive and judiciary, and for regional and local government.

It is more important than ever to get out and vote.  Many people think that their vote does not matter.  Imagine if everyone felt that way - we would never elect quality representatives! There have been many, many elections - not just local - that have been decided by less than 100 votes.  Here are some true "By One Vote" facts:

  • Texas was admitted to the Union in 1845 by a single vote

  • Hitler won leadership of the German Nazi Party in 1923

  • The US House of Representatives, in 1801, elected Thomas Jefferson as President of the United States

So thinking that your vote does not count could not be farther from the truth.  Exercise your rights and vote!
